Confessions · Spain

Blah blah blah.

Just when I think I’m getting the hang of the language…reality smacks me in the face and reminds me I’m doing as well as I think. The reminders are a good thing. But some days are more challenging…obviously.

For example, Michelle and I will be out in the city during the day before the kiddos get home from school. Obviously we are speaking in English with each other. So if we’re in line for food or something, the cashiers usually will speak to us in English. I mean come on. I know you just heard us speaking in English, but gimme a chance! That is something that I have noticed being here in Spain. People hear you speak and automatically switch. After talking with some girls our age, they explained that the Spanish who know English want to practice and will take that chance when they hear natives like us.

I guess it’s nice because we have an easier time understanding, but it gives us less of a chance to practice. However, we’re starting Spanish classes next week. Hopefully our speaking abilities will fade into the background and we’ll be able to conquer our minor difficulties with the language.

If you could learn a different language what would it be? And how would you go about immersing yourself and practicing?
